“Forgive us for diverting your folding,” said a familiar voice within my mind. “We have reason for this action… those who are beyond the diamond wall wish to examine you again. When you faced them before you were untaught, unaware that many of the matters they can teach you existed at all. Your perceptions had not been sharpened to a point at which they could grasp the Hril. Now the Hril desire to compare your present capacities to those you possessed before. The work they have in store for you is demanding, and you must be in all ways prepared.” I tried to settle my consciousness into being a puddle instead of a vortex. “Where am I? ” I asked. Something like laughter vibrated about me.

“You are here with us, in the dimension adjacent to that one in which the Hril approach us most nearly. Your body is safely within the room where you slept. We have only borrowed your real self for a short while.” As Khi-Sang spoke, my vision cleared. I could see darts and flashes of light that had to be the Khi.

She answered my surmise. “Yes, you are now as we are. The self that exists here is more a troubling of the light than a visible, tangible thing.

Come, now, to see the Hril.”

The “come” was rhetorical, for the space (or whatever) that surrounded us seemed to stretch itself, becoming a clear transparency that seemed deep, without being distant. Within this I could sense motion. The sensation reminded me of long-ago physics lessons that taught of subatomic particles so swift that only the disturbance of their passage revealed that they had been there at all. The Hril must be something like that, I decided.

There was tumult in my—not head for that wasn’t with me—thinking processes. I surmised that this must be the result of the probings of the Hril. It wasn’t frightening, though it gave me a weird “multiple” sort of feeling. There were no voices in my mind, but I sensed dartings and ripplings in the field that was my thought. I didn’t doubt that the Hril were drawing from me exactly what they wanted to know.

Then I began to see things. Not with eyes, for they too were not there.

These were like hallucinations, but somehow I knew that the things I was seeing actually did exist somewhere, in some form. I was aware that my mind was forming comprehensible analogs for the ungraspable in many cases, but there was an underlying reality.

I saw a path of glittering substance that wound in precise curves between shining domes. Plantings that seemed random grew along the way. When I looked closely, however, I realized that the positions, the heights and textures, the colors of the growing things were entirely too logically satisfying for them to have been natural. The overall effect was that a mathematical genius had been moved to calculate a perfect city, and his designs had been followed to the letter.

Shapes moved along the paths, in and out of the domes and among the flowers.
